About MMA: Social Responsibility
Community Involvement

Our commitment to community is supported at all levels of the company from its focus on providing affordable, multifamily housing, to employee participation in hands-on community and volunteer events and projects, and through support of the activities of the MuniMae Foundation.

The MuniMae Foundation: We were instrumental in creating the MuniMae Foundation, an independent, publicly supported charitable foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to sustain and promote the use of the four properties owned by the Foundation and its subsidiaries (in Texas, Georgia, Tennessee and Indiana) as affordable housing, and to encourage and support other non-profit programs and initiatives primarily in the area of multi-family affordable housing.

Recent projects and gifts:

  • Hurricane Katrina - Employee donations to The American Red Cross's Hurricane Relief were matched by the Foundation and a contribution of more than $75,000 was made for disaster relief and rebuilding efforts.
  • Tsunami Disaster Relief - Employee donations to The Tsunami Relief fund were matched by the Foundation, and, altogether, over $68,000 was contributed to disaster relief and rebuilding efforts.
  • The Enterprise Foundation - The MuniMae Foundation has supported The Enterprise Foundation's education program in public elementary and middle schools in West Baltimore by contributing to multiple projects of the Enterprise Women’s Network, a division of The Enterprise Foundation.
  • The Baltimore Station - The Foundation has provided support for this residential, recovery-oriented, therapeutic community for men who have become homeless largely due to a history of chronic substance abuse, both financially and through service on its Board by different employees of the company.
  • Phipps Houses - Each year, for the past few years, the Foundation has been a sponsor of the Community Builder Awards event, which benefits Phipps Houses, one of the nation's largest not-for-profit developers, owners, and managers of affordable housing.
  • Sarah's Circle - In 2005, the Foundation sponsored the Circle Ball benefiting Sarah's Circle, a non-profit independent living residence and community education center serving very low-income seniors in Washington, D.C. At this event, Mark Joseph, MuniMae's Chairman of the Board, was awarded the Elizabeth and Robert Dole Award for Outstanding Achievement in Enhancing the Quality of Life of the Elderly.
  • The Campaign for Affordable Housing - This nonprofit organization represents a partnership between corporate leaders, business groups, housing sponsors and the media with the sole purpose of educating Americans about the benefits of affordable housing as a community asset and supporting grassroots efforts to mobilize support for housing programs.

The MuniMae Foundation also is a sponsor of The Bob Banks Scholarship Program, which was established to broaden higher-level educational opportunities for children of MuniMae employees. The first scholarship will be awarded this fall. The program is independently managed by Scholarship America, a national nonprofit student aid service organization. The program will utilize standard Scholarship America recipient selection procedures including the consideration of past academic performance and future potential, leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Financial need will be considered and preference will be given to students who demonstrate need.
